I'm Jess. I have a background in fine art and I have been drawing and painting since the age of six. An avid cinephile, I attended film festivals every summer growing up. I enjoy translating the way I see the world onto a canvas, a set, or a screen. I have had the joy of exhibiting some of my artwork, including paintings, photography, and video art in galleries and cafes internationally. I have also worked in various roles on short films and television, but my goal is to combine my love of film and art by building a career in the art department for feature films.
My undergraduate degree is in Fine Art and I completed a master's degree in Design and Digital Media at The University of Edinburgh, where I was able to explore graphic and web design, 3D animation, and video. The projects I created during this course gave me experience using Final Cut Pro, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, InDesign, and Blender.
For my dissertation and final project, I researched the ways visual effects function as narrative elements in cinematic storytelling and produced a short film told through visual effects called Split, which I wrote, directed, produced, filmed, edited and also did the graphics and post-production.
I was one of eight graduates out of hundreds of applicants chosen for Gen Up, where I had the opportunity to participate in research and development workshops and industry seminars at TRC Media, BBC Scotland, and Channel 4, and work experience at Raise the Roof Productions, where I performed research for the UK television series Best of Both Worlds and Fill Your House For Free. My research work was rated 'ten out of ten' by one of the producers. Since then I have done work for various other companies, including Thames, IWC, Mentorn, Spindle Productions, and BBC Scotland.
I also taught short film production and editing classes at a performing arts summer programme for chidlren. Over the course of the summer, I produced 12 short films that were written and performed by children, whilst teaching them to write short screenplays, source props, operate cameras, edit, and use green screen technology and chroma key compositing.
I find great value in working in a nurturing environment with people who are excited about sharing and building upon each other's ideas to produce something incredible.
